![]() LEGO Press release: LEGO Ideas has taken a leaf out of the history books with the design of its latest set, a charming Medieval Blacksmith’s house. So, the final product looking different from the fan design was to be expected. All in all, there are many, many factors behind the scenes that play a role in the design. And when 1 set uses a lot of new elements, it means designers for other sets have less options to use new elements. Every new element that gets used for a new set, means another element has to leave. LEGO has a limit on how many different elements are in production at any given time. Besides the part count, the set needs to use parts that are currently in production. This limit is depending on another long list of requirements. The part count needs to be within a certain limit to stay economical. The set needs to be sturdy, to make sure the build doesn't get frustrating. A LEGO set needs to meet a lot of requirements. But there are some very big differences between a MOC and an official LEGO set. To be honest, I in part have to agree with the complaints. I love the style, colors and overall design. The final product didn't look like the fan design, it was dumbed down, the set lacked atmosphere, 'this is not what I voted for', etc. From the moment the first photos leaked (what is something Rebrickable will not take part in), the internet was flooded with comments. Lets adress the elephant in the room: The fan design vs. I thought it would be fun to include this set into the review, but with prices starting at €180,-, that was not really an option. One of them, 3739-1 Blacksmith Shop, has a similar design, and was a fan design as well, in a forerunner of LEGO Ideas: My Own Creation. Could this set be the kick-starter for a new series of sets?Īs mentioned in the instruction, there have been blacksmiths before in Castle land. The call for a reboot of the Castle theme has been heard for years now, even though there were recent themes like Castle (2013-2014), Kingdoms (2010-2012), Fantasy Era (2007-2009) and Knights Kingdom. It always intrigued me, but the call from the Space Police II, Blacktron II and Ice Planet 2002 was stronger, later over-screamed by Technic. There were so many unusal, non-standard LEGO parts! It was the first time I saw Leaves, Arched Bricks with an half arch and Wall Panels. I have not built much Castle myself as a kid, but I remember my brother having all the Forest Men sets. Again, a set with strong bonds to an old favorite: Castle. Today, I'm building LEGO Ideas set 21325-1 Medieval Blacksmith. It was just a blast to build, where I was feeling the love from the designers for the theme. Without having much nostalgia for the Pirates theme, I completely loved this set, ranking firmly in my top 3 of best sets from 2020. Last year, I reviewed the LEGO Ideas set 21322-1 Pirates of Barracuda Bay. Contents: Introduction The Set The Box The Parts The Build Conclusion
